Have you dreamed of getting the full gym treatment in the privacy of your own home?  The difference between a gym quality elliptical and a standard home unit is dramatic.  A Precor AMT100i is not a home unit dressed up to act like gym equipment, but is the real thing.  While the price tag of the Precor AMT100i elliptical trainer is higher than most home units the experience is like no other.

The Gazelle Freestyle is a very unusual piece of workout equipment. It can either be categorized as the poor man’s elliptical trainer, or a low cost glider. How does the Gazelle Freestyle stack up?

Gazelle Freestyle – Under the Hood

The Gazelle Freestyle has a few items which make is a good potential for a home workout and a few others which give it some very big negative marks. Let us take a look at both sides of the Gazelle Freestyle.
On the plus side of the Gazelle Freestyle is the fact of the small footprint and low weight. It tips the scales at only 46 pounds making it one of the easiest elliptical machines to move around your home. The size is only 53.5” long, 33.5” wide, and 44” high. Amazingly with the low product weight it can still support a 300 pound rider.

Gazelle Freestyle Resistance

Instead of using traditional resistance from a flywheel or eddy current brake the Gazelle Freestyle uses you as the resistance. You will need to learn to lean into the Gazelle Freestyle either forwards or backwards to push your workouts up a notch. These two methods will start engaging your arm, chest, and back muscles in the process. Due to these factors the Gazelle Freestyle can give you a very effective overall workout.

A common complaint of the Gazelle Freestyle is it can become squeaky. Many owners have discovered applying a little lubricant in the proper areas takes care of the issue quickly. Another negative is the heart monitor. It is a small thumb pad on one of the handles. It is not very accurate and can become a bit slippery on heavy workouts.

Gazelle Freestyle Portability

While the product specifications talk about the Gazelle Freestyle being foldable, you may want to take that out of your consideration. While it can be folded up, it is not as easy as it sounds. You will not want to be folding it and putting it away on a daily basis. Expect to leave it setup in your home. This is usually the best advice on exercise equipment. If you put it away you are less likely to use it.

Gazelle Freestyle Cons

The biggest negative you will probably find is when you start progressing in your fitness level. Where on a traditional elliptical you just start cranking up the resistance and using built-in programs these features are not available on the Gazelle Freestyle. You can adapt your resistance to a point by getting more aggressive in your motions and leaning into the exercise but this may not feel comfortable to you.

Gazelle Freestyle Pros

The number one advantage to the Gazelle Freestyle is the price. With the extremely low price it can be a great piece of equipment to get started with. The simple design and light weight make it ideal for many homes and apartments. It is very easy on joints with the smooth gliding motion. If you are on a tight budget you should take a serious look at the Gazelle Freestyle. If your interests are in reaching maximum fitness it would be wise to take a look at more advanced elliptical trainers instead.

Gazelle Freestyle Reviews

Pros:

1. Solid Build Quality. I used at 315lbs with no problems. Use WD40 on squeek-prone areas.
2. Inexpensive. I grabbed one for $150, and it has lasted me 5 years.
3. Stores upright against a wall or under a bed.
4. Provides a great cardio workout provided you know how to use the machine correctly.
5. Also can work Abs/Back/Bis/Tris/Chest when shifting weight from back to front and vice versa.

Cons:

1. Heart Rate Monitor is very basic, and sometimes gave strange readings. The “thumb pulse” area of the handlebar can get a little slippery with heavy perspiration.
2. Can be a little awkward to operate at first. I would use in front of a mirror so you can see what you are doing at first.

DHGrove

Best piece of exercise equipment I’ve ever used. It’s easy on the knees but gives you a full cardio workout. It tracks your speed, distance, calories burned, and heart rate. It’s not complicated to use.

This is a review of the Stamina 55-1610 Elliptical Trainer

    Name: Stamina In-Motion Elliptical Trainer
    List Price: $199.99

Rating: 3.9 out of 5 stars (891 customer reviews)

Do you want an effective workout similar to a full-sized elliptical but at a fraction of the cost? This is the promise the Stamina 55-1610 offers, but does it live up to the promise? The Stamina 55-1610 is a tiny machine compared to full-size elliptical trainers but does have some interesting features to consider.

Stamina 55-1610 Cost

If the cost of an elliptical machine has been the one thing keeping you from getting started on an exercise program the Stamina 55-1610 Elliptical could be the perfect answer. The cost is only a fraction of the cost of a full size elliptical trainer, but there are some very big trade-offs, too.

Stamina 55-1610
The first missing component on the Stamina 55-1610 is your upper body workout. A full-size elliptical usually includes moving handles to give your arms, chest, and back a workout along with your legs. The overall body workout is what helps the elliptical to be one of the most popular and efficient exercise machines on the market. An easy solution is to use an exercise band or hand weights to get your upper body into the game.

The missing handles on the Stamina 55-1610 present one additional problem. You do not have the stabilizing force of the handles found on a larger machine. Surprisingly the diminutive Stamina 55-1610 elliptical is still very stable and easy to use. If you are overly concerned about stability you can place the unit beside a table or doorway to allow yourself an easy handhold during your workout.

Stamina 55-1610 Small Size

While the small size does affect features and stability it does provide one great advantage. The Stamina 55-1610 can easily be carried around the house, accompanies you on a vacation easily, and can be packed away out of sight. The small size adds to the convenience of the Stamina 55-1610.

Stamina 55-1610 Controls

One item which becomes a little difficult to use due to the small size of the Stamina 55-1610 are the controls and display. On a full-size elliptical everything is right in front of you and easy to reach. Due to the compact design the controls and display of the Stamina 55-1610 Elliptical are near the floor. You will need to bend over to make adjustments, and look down to get an idea of your workout progress.

With the position of the electronics there is no good method to have a built-in heart monitor. You get feedback on strides, time you spend exercising, and approximate calories burned. If you want to monitor your heart rate you will need to invest in a standalone monitor which can be worn on your wrist or clipped to your waist.

Stamina 55-1610 Pros

* This will allow you in determining your complexity level
* It can offer you upper and lower body workout
* This will not strain any sensitive joints

Stamina 55-1610 Cons

* Some may complain that they will get out of balance due to lack of handle
* Not good to people who have difficulty in balancing

Stamina E55 Great Ratings

One of the most interesting things about the Stamina 55-1610 is despite the shortcomings in size, convenience, and features it manages to be rated at 4 to 5 stars by nearly 78% of all users. This is a very respectable rating for a machine which is catering to the low end of the market. If you have been putting off buying an elliptical due to cost alone, then the Stamina 55-1610 could be your solution. Just remember it is not the full-sized, feature rich, elliptical trainer you may have been dreaming about.

Schwinn 431 Differences

schwinn 431 elliptical trainerThe differences between the Schwinn 431 and 430 show up first in the elliptical trainers overall weight; the Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer tips the scales at 20 pounds heavier. The capacity of the Schwinn 431 is higher, too. It can carry a 300 pound person with ease.

Both the Schwinn 431 and 430 use a front drive dual action system including a magnetic eddy current brake system to provide resistance. Both units provide 16 different levels of resistance. The big difference is how you can utilize this resistance. The Schwinn 431 provides almost twice the programming options including:

What are you looking for in an elliptical trainer? Finding the right balance between price, size, and performance can take some serious research. If you could find an elliptical trainer where 87% of people consider it a great buy, would you be interested? The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer has managed to convince 87% of people who buy the unit they made the right choice. This is a very high percentage for any piece of exercise equipment.

Why Does the Schwinn 430 Rate Highly with Users?

The Schwinn 430 manages to get 87% of users to like their product due to the many great features built into the unit. The first factor which may catch your eye is the overall size. The Schwinn 430 measures in at 59” long, 26 inches wide and 68 inches tall. With this size it can fit in most homes with ease. The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer weighs only 152 pounds making it very easy to move on the built-in wheels.

The Schwinn 430 can be purchased at a 30% discount off of MSRP and includes free shipping from Amazon. To purchase click here.

The Schwinn 430 Elliptical Trainer uses the same Eddy Current Brake for resistance which has proven to be highly effective on other Schwinn models. The Schwinn 430 provides for 16 different resistance levels which allow new exercisers to start off easily and advanced exercisers to crank up the tension for a thorough workout.

Schwinn 430 Weight Limit

The Schwinn 430 has a 275 pound weight limit. This is high enough for most households, but if you need something a little heavier you can look into the Schwinn 420 or Schwinn 460 which have 300 pound weight limits.

Schwinn 430 Heart Rate Monitor

The Schwinn 430 heart rate monitor is built-in to the stationary handles. You need to grasp the handles for a few moments whenever you wish to check your heart rate. This is the most common method of monitoring on elliptical machines even though it can be slightly disruptive to your workout flow.

Schwinn 430 Warranty

The Schwinn 430 comes with the excellent Schwinn Warranty. The Schwinn 430 warranty has 15 years of coverage on the frame, 2 full years on other mechanical parts, and 1 year on the electronics. Labor is only covered during the first 90 days, but most parts can easily be swapped out by you.

Schwinn 430 Cons

The Schwinn 430 does not have the magazine or book rack of many elliptical machines. For most of us it is a wasted accessory anyway. Did you really plan to read a book while you are huffing, puffing, and dripping sweat during your workout? For most of us we prefer to turn on some music or the television while we exercise.

The eight workout programs included with the Schwinn 430 may not seem like many, but how often do you use all of the built-in programs on any piece of exercise equipment. The 8 programs give you a good range of workout styles and allow you to push your body in different ways.

Schwinn 430

Schwinn 430 Display Panel

The included LCD panel on the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer is easy to read and gives great feedback on your workout. It is not a backlit screen which can make it slightly difficult to read in low light rooms. As with all Schwinn exercise equipment the Schwinn 430 hits a solid balance in features and price.

Schwinn 430 Reviews

Why I chose the Schwinn 430
-Price (esp on Amazon w/ mat and shipping)
-Space saving
-ECB resistance
-Forward + Backward
-25 lb flywheel (per manual)
-18″ stride

Why I’m happy after buying
-Feels solidly built, like it will last
-Relatively quiet
-Forward + Backward motion
-Bargain price, esp w/ Amazon mat + shipping
-I get a good workout

Balefire – Indianapolis, IN

General Use – The ECB system makes for a very quiet, very smooth ride. Parents of newborns will find this welcome when space restrictions require exercise close to their sleeping babe (aside from an occasional electronic beep, but not a nap breaker). The forward and reverse option is an added benefit not found on other machines in this price range.

Size – No excuse here. Though slightly wider than a ski machine, the 430 will fit in any apartment. The front rollers make it possible, (not easy), to move the unit into a corner when not in use.

Electronics – Nice array of feedback though no backlight with this model. Heart rate monitor is lacking, however. When compared to a “Polar” HRM with chest strap the 430′s HRM took about 60 seconds to display an accurate reading. Since the sensors are located on the stationary handlebars this feature is not helpful to someone who chooses to use the dynamic handlebars for upper body movement.

PERFORMANCE – Once you get the unit together you’ll find one smooth ride.

Getting yourself motivated to start training is sometime difficult. Sticking with it is even harder if your equipment is clunky and hard to use. The Sole E35 Elliptical Trainer is up to the challenge of keeping you excited and interested in sticking to your exercise plans.

The Sole E35 includes several features which you should look for on any elliptical:

Sole E35 Features

• Heavy and smooth flywheel.
• Oversized foot pads.
• Smooth moving power incline system.
• Easy to use controls.
• Accurate workout monitor.
• Built-in exercise programs.

While you may have a few other features on your wish list, those are some of the most important. The Sole E35 stacks up great on all of these benchmarks.
sole fitness e35 elliptical trainerThe Sole E35 has a 25 pound flywheel. It spins smoothly and easily helping to avoid those erratic feeling stops in your stride. If you have ever tried out a cheap elliptical you should understand what we are talking about. On low grade equipment you can feel slight stops at several pointing in your stride. It makes it very difficult to keep up a consistent motion and to get into the groove of your workout. This is never a problem on the Sole E35.

Sole E35 – Foot Pedals

The oversized foot pads on the Sole TheE35 Elliptical trainer add one other great feature. Instead of being completely level they are tilted 2 degrees. While this may sound a bit strange, it is nearly the perfect position when you push down on each step. You will quickly notice the difference. It reduces both knee and ankle strain keeping your feet at a more natural angle.

One point of frustration on some elliptical exercise machines is when the incline motor kicks in. Suddenly you get a shudder and shake and can feel off balance. The Sole E35 has this problem under control. Their incline system works smoothly all the way from flat up to the 30 degree maximum incline.

Adjustment controls need to be extremely easy to reach and use or they become annoying rapidly. When the sweat is dripping off your body, your heart rate is accelerated, and you are breathing a bit harder is not the time you want to struggle making adjustments. You want to be able to make a quick push button adjustment and keep your workout going. The Sole E35 Elliptical Trainer provides an easy to use system. Everything is right at your fingertips and easy to use.

If you prefer to avoid making adjustments on your own during the workout just setup the Sole E35 elliptical trainer to use one of the 6 built-in programs or you can create up to 2 custom workout programs of your own. This allows you to stay focused on your workout instead of playing with the controls.

Sole E35 Display

Another great feature on the Sole E35 Elliptical is the workout monitor. You do not need to keep putting your hands down on touch pads like many elliptical trainers use. The Sole E35 uses a chest strap to give you more accurate measurements and keep your hands free to keep pumping in motion with your workout.
The Sole E35 Elliptical should make it to your short list of trainers to check out carefully. The Sole E35 elliptical trainer is one of the best pieces of exercise equipment on the market in the price range.

Sole E35 Reviews

Of the “consumer grade” elliptical trainers sold online and in some of the big box stores the E35 is one of the best. I’ve done a lot of research and the Sole has a smooth solid feel that many of the others (especially less expensive ellipticals) can’t match.

The most important thing to remember is the best machine is the one you’ll USE. If you have a jerky, clunky, noisy, or otherwise unpleasant elliptical you’re less likely to use it regularly.

What you want in an elliptical is a solid frame that doesn’t flex much when you really pound on it at higher resistance levels and work hard with your arms. If you try that on a cheaper machine, it will rock, flex, creak, squeek, clunk, etc. The E35 passes this test.

Embedded Flyer – Seattle, WA

I recently purchased the Sole E35 2011 model after spending a few weeks online researching between the Sole, Norditrack, Horizon, and other top models. I then went and tried a few machines out at some local shops, and my choice landed on the E35.

Reasons I chose the E35 over the E25 or E95, was mainly the heavier wheel and the longer unit was the perfect sweet spot. I also was buying this unit for my wife as well.

This list of the Sole E95 features may not mean much to you if you are buying your first elliptical trainer.  Let us take a little closer look at the Sole E95.

Sole E95 Display

sole e95 elliptical trainerThe 9 inch LCD display on the Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer is one of the largest on any home elliptical machine.  It gives you an easy to read display allowing you to understand your workout progress at a glance.  The Sole E95 display is equal to the commercial displays on most gym quality machines.

A powered incline allows you to adjust the incline on the fly during your workout.  Instead of jumping off the Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer and making an adjustment you just push the button and feel the change as you keep your legs in motion.  The movement is smooth and easy.

Video Review

The heavy 30 pound flywheel may be one of the most important features.  It makes sure your exercise stays smooth.  The flywheel eliminates the hesitations and jerks commonly experienced on lower grade machines.  You will enjoy the smooth action.

The built-in sound system is a favorite add-on which increases your enjoyment.  It does nothing to increase your workout efficiency, unless you feel like having your favorite music blasting out helps you stay motivated and excited throughout the workout.

Pumping the elliptical pedals is sure to produce one thing in every workout.  It will produce plentiful sweat.  The built-in cooling fans allow you to catch a little breeze without needing to constantly remember to move a fan around with your trainer.

Sole E95 Heart Rate Monitor

The heart rate monitor is one of the best features on the Sole E95 elliptical trainer.  Sole did not opt to use the standard handle pads like most companies but chose to go with a wireless chest strap.  This gives you higher accuracy in measurements, up to 99.9 percent accurate.  The bigger advantage is the fact it never interferes with your workout.  When you are heavily wrapped up in your workout routine, listening to some fast motivating music, and in the flow of motion you do not want to keep interrupting your motion by moving your hands to the hand grips.  With the wireless monitor you get constant feedback and always know what is happening.  You can even use the feedback to customize the built-in programs.

To wrap up the Sole E95 Elliptical into being a best buy product, just throw in their 400 pound weight capacity and unbelievable warranty.  Sole gives you a lifetime warranty on the frame, 5 years on parts and electronics, and 2 full years on labor.  It is one of the leading warranties on the market.  The Sole E95 is a fantastic machine for your home gym.

Sole E95 Reviews

The E95 is very smooth and the integrated programs are great. I especially enjoy the wireless heart rate strap and the associated workouts. The machine is heavy and the assembly is not difficult but does take some time. I would highly recommend it

Brian L. Blevins

Overall, I have found this elliptical to be most everything that people have said it would be … smooth, quiet operation, well built, etc. However, I don’t believe it is worth trading up to the E95 … I would probably go with the E35 and save a few bucks.

Pros:
1) Very smooth and quiet (have to keep the rails lubed)
2) Good LCD screen
3) Numerous programming options (not sure I will end up using them all though)
4) Heart rate monitor works well (you need to wet the sensors slightly before working out)

Cons:
1) Tedious assembly, however, everything lined up and fit correctly. Sole should give you more slack in some of the cables to connect the monitor and the tools supplied are a joke.
2) Fan and speakers are weak
3) Foot pedals are adjustable vertically but not for camber … they make a big deal about the pedal positioning but my feet still became fatigued within 30 minutes of use. This is a common problem with elipticals.

After 3 months of usage, the pros clearly outweigh the cons

When you start looking for lower cost elliptical trainers you often end up with very poor quality.  The Schwinn 420 Elliptical manages to balance low cost with good quality features providing an excellent workout experience.  While the Schwinn 420 may not be the perfect elliptical it is a solid contender at the right price.  Here are a few of the highlights:
Save over 25% of MSRP at Amazon

Schwinn 420 Highlights

•    Lower and Upper Body Workout
•    12 Built-in Programs
•    Heart Rate System
•    18 Inch Stride
•    300 Pound Weight Capacity

We need to dig a little deeper into these features and a few others to get a better idea if the Schwinn 420 meets your needs.
The Schwinn 420′s 18 inch stride is adequate for most people but can be a bit challenging if you are tall.  Some models of elliptical machines have 20 inch or longer strides which are more comfortable and fluid for taller individuals.  If you are an average height woman or man the 18 inch stride will feel very natural.

Schwinn 420 Video – Watch Now

You can purchase the Schwinn 420 from Amazon at an almost 25% discount of MSRP and get free shipping. If you want to purchase the Schwinn 420 click here

The heart rate monitor on the Schwinn 420 is done through the hand grips.  The system works very well and will give you proper feedback.  This type of system is not always the most ideal, but is what you will normally find in lower cost elliptical systems.  The Schwinn 420 Elliptical implements the system very well.  The only problem with a hand grip system it is difficult to have constant monitoring.  A system which uses either a thumb attached lead or chest harness gives you full-time monitoring.  While this is a slight negative, it usually requires spending almost twice the price of the Schwinn 420 to find more advanced monitoring systems.

Schwinn 420 Workout Handles

The Schwinn 420 includes two sets of handles for use during your workout.  The first set is the movable upper body workout arms.  They move smoothly and help you keep your entire body engaged in exercise.  The second set is the stationary handles, which is where the heart monitor is mounted.  Depending on your own workout preference you may find yourself using the stationary handles most often.  For some people the Schwinn 420 handles are a little low and too close together.

Schwinn 420 Weight Limit

The 300 pound weight limit can be a big negative for the Schwinn 420.  While it is adequate for most families it can push the limits on others.  The 300 pound limit is common across the Schwinn line but is eclipsed by brand like Sole and Precor which often offer 350 to 400 pound weight limits.  If no one in the family is approaching the 300 pound weight limit the Schwinn 420 will work perfectly.

Schwinn 420 Built-in Programs

The built-in programs are a strong point of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer.  The trainer includes 16 resistance levels and 11 workout programs, plus 1 custom program you can design for yourself.  This gives you great variety in your workouts and allows you to keep your interest high.  Make sure you try a variety of the different routines and avoid getting stuck on just one.  After all, variety in your workout adds to effectiveness and weight loss.  Overall the Schwinn 420 is a great bargain offering high quality features at a great price point.

Schwinn 420 Reviews

The elliptical itself feels sturdy and well built. I am 300 pounds and it supports my weight without shaking or wobbling. The 18″ stride and the handles feel comfortable for my 5’10″ frame. I heard some complaints from the salesmen at the sports store that the handles were to far forward but I did not have that problem. The console is pretty basic but what was expected for the price.

Bottom line is if you are looking for a sub $600 elliptical that is well built, this is the one for you.

C. Craig – Bakersfield, CA

This machine is super-quiet, with no squeaking so far. I can watch TV at normal volume while doing my workouts. There were several complaints that on the 430 (the predecessor to this model), the easiest level was acutally pretty difficult, and I don’t find that to be the case here at all even though I haven’t worked out at all in months.

The stride works for me, as I’m short (5’0″). The handlebars are also fine for me, but just barely. Any further and they would be very awkward to grip.

toasty – Washington

The Schwinn 420 is a good entry level machine which you can buy now from Amazon.

Sole E55 Elliptical Trainer

SOLE E55 EFFECTIVENESS

The Sole E55 model is based off of its little cousin, the E35.  The Sole E55 has a larger and heavier flywheel, which offers more resistance for a better and more efficient workout.  Also has a higher gear ratio than the E35, and a quieter drive system.  The ramp adjusts up to 40 degrees, allowing you to individually target nearly every muscle in your legs.  For someone that has never used an elliptical machine before, you will feel right at home on the Sole E55.

EASY DISPLAY

Sole E55The Sole E55 LCD screen makes setting up and operating the machine very simple and straightforward, with minimal background knowledge required.  The display is much larger than its smaller cousin the Sole E35. The Sole E55 display is equivalent to what you would expect on gym quality machines. It is easy to track your workout progress because there are windows to display resistance, incline, time, distance, calories burned, pulse, and pace. You can also hook up your MP3 player or iPod and listen to your favorite music while working out on the Sole E55.

ADJUSTABLE FOOT PEDALS

To encourage a more comfortable workout, Sole added over sized, custom-designed foot pedals to the Sole E55. Designed in collaboration with a leading physical therapist and sports enthusiast, the pedals feature a 2-degree inward slope, helping reduce the ankle and knee stress that’s common in other elliptical machines. This collaboration also produced a revolutionary foot pedal adjustment system not found on any other elliptical brand. Sole knows that not everyone walks the same way, so the company’s engineers designed the Sole E55 to adjust to your gait via a dial mechanism. This allows you to set the pedal angle from heel to toe, with 10 total choices. This feature on the Sole E55 also reduces the numb toe effects and sore Achilles tendons common on other elliptical machines.

PRODUCT REVIEWS

i bought the e55 as a Christmas gift for my wife. the e55 is very durable, extremely quiet, easy to construct (2 hours while watching a movie) and the electronics are user friendly, isn’t jerky, etc. she really enjoys the e55. i felt the e55 was a bargain based on anticipated life cycle. i would recommend the e55. delivery was very quick with no physical damage due to heavy internal padding.

its a worth it buy I worked out at NY Sports Club and NYC Racquet Club (Precore and Lifefitness for years, this is the same gym quality for a at home price. Invest in yourself and invest in your personal health no gym rats staring you down or limited cardio work outs. Again its a five star purchase
